The course

Founded in 1895, Puerta de Hierro is the oldest golf club in central Spain and one of the most exclusive private clubs in continental Europe. Two championship eighteens (Hoyos Arriba and Hoyos Abajo) climb and fall across the western edge of Madrid; the routing is intricate, the conditioning faultless, and the membership famously private. Visitor access requires an introduction from a member — this is not a green-fee-on-Saturday kind of place.

When to play

The Madrid playing calendar applies: April-June and September-November are peak. Member play dominates weekends; rare visitor slots are mid-week. Summer is hot enough that even the members migrate to morning rounds.

Green fee & value

Standard green fees do not really apply — visitor play is by member introduction, and the cost is bespoke. What you are paying for is access to one of the most historically significant golf venues on the continent. The list of past members reads like a 20th-century history book of Spain.

Access & etiquette

Strict handicap requirement (typically 24 or lower). Full member-introduction protocol. Dress code at the highest end of Spanish golf — collared shirt, tailored trousers, jacket required in the clubhouse evenings. Phones discouraged on course.

Getting there

Inside Madrid's city limits, fifteen minutes from the Royal Palace, ten from the Moncloa government complex. Twenty minutes by car from Barajas airport (MAD). If you have access, you do not need a guidebook — your host will sort it.
