The course

Basozabal is San Sebastián's modern golf alternative to the historic Real Golf Club at Hondarribia — opened as the Basque country's response to growing local demand, the course sits in the wooded hills above the city with views toward the Bay of Biscay from the upper holes. The routing is genuinely strategic: tight fairways framed by oak and pine, greens that reward the correct angle of approach, and elevation changes that make club selection a constant negotiation with the Atlantic wind. This is northern Spain's golf register — different from the Costa del Sol, less heritage than Hondarribia, but absolutely its own. The clubhouse atmosphere is straightforwardly Basque: serious about the game, serious about the meal that follows.

When to play

Basque-country golf plays by Atlantic rules: green and lush May through October, with summer temperatures rarely breaking the comfortable mid-20s. Best months are May, June, and September, when the rainfall stays moderate and the temperature peaks for golfing comfort. Winter is playable but soft underfoot — the high-rainfall season tests both the course drainage and the player's commitment. Weekday tee sheets walk on easily outside the local summer holiday weeks.

Green fee & value

Strong value for Basque-country golf — green fees notably below the Costa del Sol equivalents for comparable design quality and superior summer conditions. The course works particularly well as the multi-day complement to the older Real Golf Club at Hondarribia for a Basque golf weekend. Local membership volume keeps the conditioning sharp and the booking system efficient.

Access & etiquette

Handicap certificate (28/36) typically requested. Dress code is traditional Basque golf — collared shirt, tailored shorts or trousers, no athletic wear in the clubhouse. Booking is advised, particularly during the local summer season when San Sebastián's tourist peak overlaps with member play.

Getting there

Twenty minutes by car from San Sebastián airport (EAS) at Hondarribia, ninety minutes from Bilbao (BIO) along the AP-8 coastal motorway. The course is fifteen minutes from central San Sebastián / Donostia — making this the rare Basque golf option where a city-centre base is more natural than a coastal one.
