The course

The Real Club de Zarautz is one of the oldest golf clubs in Spain — founded in 1916 on the Basque coast, with a routing that hugs the sea cliffs above the Zarautz surf strand. The course plays as a true Atlantic links: short by modern championship standards, but defended by the relentless coastal wind, firm fairways, and greens that have absorbed a century of weather. The architectural pedigree is genuinely historic, the membership treasures the heritage, and the closing stretch with the Atlantic to your right is among the most atmospheric finishes in northern Spanish golf. This is the heritage round of the Basque coast.

When to play

The Basque coast calendar is generous but Atlantic-honest. May through October is the comfort spread; June and September are the peaks for combining playable weather with manageable visitor density. July-August has the heaviest local traffic but the most reliable conditions. Winter rounds are playable on dry windows but the Atlantic systems are the limiter. The wind is the constant variable year-round — bring extra clubs.

Green fee & value

Premium Basque pricing reflecting the heritage status and the coastal real estate — well above the regional public tier but justified by the architectural pedigree and the cliff-top routing. Multi-round packages with Zarautz or San Sebastián accommodation are the obvious play. Worth the number for the rarity of true Spanish links golf.

Access & etiquette

Handicap certificate (24/28 men, 36 women) requested and checked at the pro shop. Dress code is firmly traditional — collared shirt, tailored trousers or shorts, soft spikes mandatory, no athletic logos in formal clubhouse areas. Booking essential well in advance during summer; member-priority slots dominate the weekend tee sheet.

Getting there

Twenty-five minutes by car from San Sebastián airport (EAS), forty from Bilbao (BIO). Zarautz town is five minutes from the clubhouse, San Sebastián thirty minutes east along the coast. The coastal pairing is the canonical Basque day — <a href="https://playascerca.com/en/region/pais-vasco/" rel="noopener">Zarautz beach itself is one of the longest surf beaches on the Basque coast</a>, with Getaria and the Txakoli vineyards fifteen minutes west. San Sebastián's pintxo district is the cultural anchor for the post-round evening.
