The course

El Encín sits east of Madrid at Alcalá de Henares, the historic university town and Cervantes' birthplace, with the course set into former agricultural land that still carries its grove-and-pasture character. The routing is honest parkland golf — wide fairways, mature trees giving structure, greens that read truer than their modest pedigree suggests. This is a workhorse course for the eastern Madrid corridor's commuter players, with the kind of relaxed atmosphere that makes the round about playing rather than performing. The driving range and short-game complex are notably good for a course at this price tier, and the academy fees are among the most accessible in central Spain.

When to play

Madrid's two-peak season runs the calendar: April through June and September through November are at peak comfort. July-August are dawn-rounds territory; the meseta heat past 11:00 is unforgiving. The course's location east of Madrid means slightly higher temperatures than the western suburbs in summer, but also faster drainage in winter. Weekday afternoons during the academic year see steady commuter traffic; weekday mornings and weekend lunch hours offer the easier windows.

Green fee & value

Public-tier pricing — meaningful value as one of the cheapest serious golf options inside the wider Madrid metropolitan area, particularly for travelling players who want a round before catching a flight or before a meeting in the city centre. Twilight rates are excellent and worth using in shoulder season. The course pairs well with cultural day-trip combinations to Alcalá de Henares' historic centre.

Access & etiquette

No handicap gate — genuinely pay-and-play. Dress code is enforced but not aggressively (collared shirt, no denim, sensible footwear). Booking is essential at weekends and during commuter peaks; weekday mornings walk on without difficulty. Buggies are optional and the routing walks comfortably.

Getting there

Twenty-five minutes by car from Barajas airport (MAD) via the A-2 motorway east — making this one of the easier "land and play before the meetings start" options on the Madrid eastern corridor. Central Madrid is thirty-five minutes west in light traffic, longer at peak hours. Alcalá de Henares' UNESCO-listed historic centre is fifteen minutes away — pair the round with the Cervantes Birthplace Museum and the Universidad de Alcalá historic core for a non-golf cultural afternoon.
