The course

Artxanda is Bilbao's municipal nine-hole course, set on the wooded slopes of Mount Artxanda above the city centre — accessed by the historic funicular railway if you want to arrive by the local route. The routing makes the most of limited terrain: tight fairways framed by oak and beech, greens that reward a confident putt rather than a perfect strike, and elevation changes that make every approach shot a genuine club-selection negotiation. This is honest urban municipal golf in northern Spain's Atlantic register, with views of the Nervión river valley and central Bilbao from the upper holes. The clubhouse terrace is one of the under-the-radar Bilbao viewpoints.

When to play

Basque-country Atlantic climate: green and playable May through October, with summer temperatures in the comfortable mid-20s. Best months are May, June, and September. Winter is wet but functional — the course drains acceptably and the local volume drops to easy walk-on tee times. Summer afternoons can carry a sea breeze off the Bay of Biscay that genuinely affects club selection. Weekday mornings outside the local summer holiday weeks find easy access.

Green fee & value

Excellent value as a municipal nine-hole — one of the most accessible golf experiences in the Basque country, with green fees a fraction of the Hondarribia or Basozabal equivalents. The short format works well for half-day combinations with Bilbao's cultural offerings. Two-round tickets and multi-visit cards are available through the municipal booking system.

Access & etiquette

No strict handicap requirement — visitors of all levels welcome. Dress code is traditional but relaxed for a municipal course (collared shirt, no denim, sensible footwear). Booking is advised at weekends and during the local summer season; weekday mornings walk on easily. The clubhouse facilities are modest but well-staffed.

Getting there

Twenty minutes by car from Bilbao airport (BIO) via the city ring road, ten minutes from central Bilbao via the same route. The genuinely characterful arrival is the Artxanda funicular railway from the city centre — uphill in three minutes, with a viewpoint terrace at the top that is one of Bilbao's signature spots. Pair the round with the Guggenheim Museum and a walk through the Casco Viejo old town for the canonical Bilbao day. The Bay of Biscay beaches at Sopelana are thirty minutes north for the coastal half of the day.
