What to expect
The course
This is where Severiano Ballesteros learned to play, caddying as a boy on the very fairways he would later make famous. Harry Colt laid it out in 1928 above the Bay of Santander, and the routing still carries his fingerprints — uphill par-4s that demand a controlled fade, downhill par-3s that reward nerve over distance. Play it and you understand instantly why Seve hit shots no one else dared.
When to play
Northern Spain plays by Atlantic rules: green and lush from April through October, with summer temperatures that rarely break 26°C — the most comfortable round in Spain when the southern courses are baking. Best months are May, June, and September. Winter is playable but wet; book afternoon tee times after morning mist clears.
Green fee & value
Premium pricing for a heritage course, but the green fee is the bargain of Spanish golf relative to what you get: a Harry Colt original, Atlantic views, and the genuine ghost of Seve in every drive. Twilight rates exist in shoulder season and are worth the gamble if late light is in your favour.
Access & etiquette
Handicap certificate (typically 28 or lower for men, 36 for women) is requested though enforcement is friendly for visitors paying full green fee. Strict on dress: collared shirts, tailored shorts, no athletic wear in the clubhouse.
Getting there
Twenty minutes by car from Santander airport (SDR) — one of the shortest airport-to-tee transfers in Spanish golf. From Bilbao (BIO) it is roughly an hour along the AP-8 coastal motorway. A short ferry from Santander harbour reaches the Pedreña peninsula in summer, which is the romantic way to arrive. Combine with the nearby Cantabrian beaches at Somo and El Sardinero for a coastal weekend.
