The course

Cabell Robinson designed Santana in the inland Mijas hillside above La Cala, and the routing reflects his signature: wide fairways framed by mature olive and almond, large strategically contoured greens, and elevation changes that demand thoughtful club selection rather than punishing brute force. The course plays as one of the more genuinely scoreable championship layouts on the Costa del Sol — receptive to the confident mid-handicapper, demanding for the player chasing a tournament number. The Mediterranean is in view from the upper holes, framing rather than distracting from the routing. The short-game area is one of the more serious practice complexes in the area.

When to play

Costa del Sol seasonality applies but the inland elevation gives Santana an edge in shoulder season — slightly cooler mornings, less coastal humidity, and a longer comfortable autumn than the cliffside resorts further west. October through May peaks for comfort, February through April for visitor volume. Summer rounds before 10:00, with the buggy-or-bust afternoon reality of the inland Mijas hills. Tee sheets fill fast on weekend mornings; weekday afternoons in shoulder season are the easier window.

Green fee & value

Mid-to-upper Costa del Sol pricing for a Cabell Robinson design — meaningful value relative to the comparable architecture on the coast, particularly when combined with the resort's on-site accommodation packages. Stay-and-play deals through Santana's partner hotels in La Cala de Mijas village trim the per-round cost. Twilight rates exist and are worth chasing in shoulder season.

Access & etiquette

Handicap certificate (28/36) typically requested. Dress code is standard Spanish golf — collared shirt, tailored shorts or trousers, soft spikes only. Booking advised, particularly weekend mornings. The clubhouse and short-game complex are notably well-conditioned, and the practice area is worth arriving for thirty minutes early.

Getting there

Twenty-five minutes by car from Málaga airport (AGP) via the A-7 then the La Cala de Mijas inland turnoff. Marbella is twenty minutes west, central Málaga thirty minutes east. The course is fifteen minutes from the <a href="https://playascerca.com/en/city/fuengirola/" rel="noopener">La Cala de Mijas village beaches at Playa La Butibamba and Playa Calahonda</a> — pair the round with an after-game swim and an evening at the village's tapas terraces. The Mijas mountain villages are a short drive for the off-course afternoon.
