The course

Calanova sits on the inland edge of La Cala de Mijas, draped across a hillside that gives almost every hole a sea view in the middle distance and a serious gradient to negotiate on the way to the green. The routing leans into the topography rather than fighting it — sloping fairways, raised tees, and greens cut to reward a controlled approach over a heroic one. The conditioning is consistently high by Costa del Sol mid-tier standards, and the design has earned a quiet reputation among repeat visitors as the value pick of the Mijas hillside circuit. Not a championship layout, but never trying to be one.

When to play

The Costa del Sol calendar applies. October through May is the comfortable spread; February through April peaks for European visitor traffic. Summer plays from dawn rounds before the inland-Mijas heat takes hold past mid-morning. The hillside routing rewards spring rounds when the gorse and wildflower colour the rough — a small but real visual bonus the flatter coastal layouts cannot match.

Green fee & value

Solidly mid-tier Costa del Sol pricing — well below the Nueva Andalucía championship venues and reasonable for the conditioning. Twilight rates are particularly good value given the hillside light in late afternoon. Multi-round packages combined with La Cala or Mijas Costa accommodation make this a sensible week-of-golf anchor rather than a one-off premium round.

Access & etiquette

Handicap policy is welcoming — visitors of all reasonable standards play here without scrutiny at the pro shop. Dress code is standard Spanish golf: collared shirt, tailored shorts or trousers, soft spikes encouraged. Booking essential in season, particularly at weekends. Buggies recommended given the hillside elevations.

Getting there

Thirty-five minutes by car from Málaga airport (AGP) via the A-7, ten minutes inland from La Cala de Mijas, twenty from Marbella. The course pairs naturally with the broader Mijas Costa golf clutch — La Cala Resort and Mijas Golf are within fifteen minutes. The coastal half of the day belongs to <a href="https://playascerca.com/en/city/fuengirola/" rel="noopener">La Cala de Mijas beach and the Calahonda coves</a> — direct fifteen-minute drop from the clubhouse to the sand.
