The course

Jack Nicklaus laid out Montecastillo across the rolling Jerez countryside, and the design carries his signature defensive bias: large, contoured greens that demand the right angle of approach more than raw distance. The course hosted the Volvo Masters multiple times in the late 1990s, and the closing stretch still plays as a genuine tournament finish — wind off the Cádiz coast turns the par-4 17th from playable to terrifying in an hour.

When to play

Sherry country opens a long season: October through May offers the most comfortable golf, with mild winters and dry, bright spring days. June and September are excellent on either side of the midday heat. July and August are early-morning only — Andalucian inland heat punishes the afternoon.

Green fee & value

Resort-tier pricing with genuine championship pedigree behind it. Stay-and-play packages through the Barceló hotel are typically better value than walk-in green fees. Twilight rates in shoulder season are worth chasing.

Access & etiquette

No strict handicap gate for resort guests, though the course rewards players who can manage their ball. Standard Spanish dress code applies. Buggies are common given the rolling routing, though walking remains an option for fit players.

Getting there

Thirty minutes by car from Jerez airport (XRY), an hour from Seville (SVQ), ninety minutes from Málaga (AGP). The location pairs naturally with a Cádiz coast base — combine a round with the <a href="https://playascerca.com/en/region/andalucia/" rel="noopener">Atlantic beaches at El Puerto de Santa María, Bolonia or Conil</a> for a non-golfing companion's perfect day.
